Advantages Of Dancing

We all know how much fun dancing can be, and admit it, when you’re alone in the room, you can’t help but shake it! But, did you know that there are so many advantages of dancing line, fitness benefits of dance and also health and psychological benefits?

Here is a list of all the many, many advantages of dancing:

1. Weight Loss

One of the most well-known advantages of dancing is weight loss! Imagine being able to have fun while you burn calories.

I’m sure you have all heard of Zumba. This is the exact concept that Zumba has put to practice and classes are now opening all over the world!

2. Muscular Strength

That’s right. By dancing you are working out all those muscles in your body. Unlike routine workouts, dancing targets the whole body in one go! So, build up your muscles, and dance the night away!

This is especially seen in dances like ballet and hip-hop. If you take a good look at a ballet dancers calves, you will notice just how chiseled they are!

3. Stronger Bones

Weight bearing activities have a direct connection with the building of bones in your body. Since dancing places quite a bit of stress on the legs, it is considered to be a weight bearing exercise. Thus, strengthening your bones

4. Flexibility

If you are more of a contemporary dancer, then say hello to your new partner – Flexibility! Much like yoga, there are certain dances which include you stretching out your body. This makes you quite flexible if practiced often enough.

5. Agility

Agility is the ability to be quick and graceful at the same time. If you are also into martial arts, I do suggest trying dancing as well, as agility is a must for both.

6. Improved Heart and Lung Condition

Initially, when you begin dancing, you might find that you do not have the necessary stamina. But, when you continue to practice, you will find a steady increase in stamina. This could only mean one thing – your heart rate has improved, as have your lungs, as you are no longer out of breath!

7. Psychological Strengthening

Dancing has been known to help greatly with building one’s self confidence and self-esteem. You may have witnessed in many movies like ‘Step Up’, where the person uses the music and movements to get rid of all negative emotions within them.

8. Social Skills

Did you know that a person who dances is more likely to be approached than a person who doesn’t? This is because they are seen as more confident and more approachable. People who don’t dance are viewed as closed books, who do not want to mingle.

9. Balance

To be a good dancer, you need to possess a great sense of balance. Your center of gravity automatically improves, giving you better balance.

Just take a look at all those ballet dancers and you will know exactly what I’m talking about. Ballet dancers are much like us, they did not begin by being able to stand on the tip on their toes, they too had to work their way to achieving it.

Or why even go so far? Take a look at our very own Indian classical dancers! They’re the perfect epitome of perfection!

10. Parkinson’s Disease

As Parkinson’s is a neurological disease, it is highly important that you remain active as possible. It is possibly the least known advantage of dancing but, is in no way any less than the others.

In 2001, Olie Westheimer, the Founder and Executive Director of Brooklyn Parkinson Group, collaborated with the Mark Morris Dance Group and began the first ever Dance for Parkinson’s Disease program!

Take a look at Rafi Eldor, who is certainly an inspiration to all of us today:

Don’t be afraid to dance your heart out next time you are at a party! Who knows you might actually be harboring a hidden talent within you!
