About the BMI Calculator
BMI is weight divided by height squared (kg/m²). It is a quick screening number, not a diagnosis: it cannot tell muscle from fat, and it does not consider age, body shape or where fat is stored.
The WHO uses 18.5–24.9 as the “normal” range for adults. For people of South Asian origin, the WHO Asia-Pacific guidance flags health risk earlier — overweight from 23 and obesity from 25 — so this calculator shows both.
Frequently asked questions
What is a healthy BMI for Indians?
Asia-Pacific guidance treats a BMI of 18.5–22.9 as the healthy range for South Asians, 23–24.9 as overweight and 25 or above as obese, because health risks rise at lower BMI values.
Is BMI accurate for athletes?
Not always. Muscle weighs more than fat, so a muscular person can have a high BMI without excess body fat. Waist measurement and body fat percentage give a better picture.
